beyond retro stockholm
The good thing about sailing to Sweden is that you get to visit Stockholm. Beyond Retro is the place where I always go first. They have two stores in Stockholm, one in Södermalm (Åsögatan 144) and one in the centre (Drottninggatan 77). They also have many stores in the UK. I took Paula and my assistant Tiia to there because they had not visted the stores before. Beyond Retro is a second hand shoping dream. Usually shops have maybe one or two things you are looking for in your size, style or color, but BR has a rack full of them. The shops are very well organized by category and color so they are both easy to shop and a delight to look at. Staff is easy going and happy and the music is hip. When I was younger I dreamt BR to open a shop in Helsinki, because I wanted to work there. I still would. I love what they do with the store visuals and I recommend everyone to go there. Especially if you are interested to see how second hand business is done as it should.
Beyond Retro also has their own upcycling collection which includes pieces that are customized to be more fashionable and trendy. I love what they do with them. You can find refashioned shorts, tops, jackets, fur, and accessories. All sewn using recycled textiles. The clothes come originally from Canada and the US. The custom sewing is done in India to support local work for women. Since the shops collection is curated and sorted properly, the clothes cost a bit more than in your local Humana/UFF shop, but it is much easier to find what you are looking for.
I´m still waiting for BR to open a shop in Helsinki. We definitely would need one. It would be a great alternative for especially all the young people shopping at H&M/GinaTricot/Zara. What do you think? Would you like to see a store like this open their doors in Helsinki? To me this would be the nro 1 shopping destination for second hand and also just to hang out.
