Kanye pimped denim

A friend pointed me out to Kanye yesterday. Normally I would not give much to follow his doings, but this got my attention.

Friday was the launch of Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, his seventh studio album. It was announced with a limited edition merchandise sale at a pop-up shop in NYC. The shop was planned to be open only four hours and shoppers began lining up over 24-hours in advance. The store had multiple racks strategically placed throughout the space, showcasing the clothes that were done in collaboration with American artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt. Cali has been a loud and visible critic and commentator of the american culture since 2010. The TLOP merchandise ranges from tees and hoodies to denim jackets, caps, beanies and various other outerwear styles.

What interested me was the second hand denim jackets based on the infamous TLOP tracklist notepad (labeled the “Squad Sheet Vintage Jean Jacket”). It was priced at $400. I loved the fact that Kanye is doing refashions as his merchandise, because it is the greener way to go. But I´m hoping he will collaborate with up cycling designers also in the future. As I am a recycle fashion designer and seamstress myself, pimping up second hand clothes with prints is not very innovative in my opinion.  But he is still doing much more and much better than many other artists with new albums and new merchandise. Also, I love limited edition stuff, so brands and artists would not manufacture more than what their fans really buy. (I also hope these were printed in NYC by locals that were paid a fair wage.)

I wonder if the Finnish designer Sasu Kauppi gave him this idea, because he has been working with upcycling and recycled materials in Finland. I think it would be so cool if an artist took their unsold previous tour march and just printed the new tour graphics on to of them. And would not make any new ones until the old stock had been sold out.

So, thumbs up, Kanye! Show them hot it is done.

EDIT: Lukija kommentoi faceen näin: “Osta kirpparilta vanha farkkurotsi ja tuunaa siihen punasella teksti PABLO ja laita hintalappuun 400$. Hyvin ainakin ideoitu kunnon katteet $€¥”.

Jotain on tehty taas oikein. Se on jännä tuo miten Kanyekin onnistuu myymään blankkoja valkoisia teepaitoja ja pyytää muina miehinä satasia. Hinta ja arvo on edelleen kädet ristissä.
