As you know, our consumption habits and love for plastic is killing the oceans and oceanic wildlife. Plastic is not fantastic. But Finnish jewerly artist Wiebke Pandikow sees plastic in a different way. She designs and makes artistic jewelry from recycled plastics. Growing up in the forests of the northeast of Germany, nature and biology have interested her since a very young age, but eventually it was the making of things, first expressed through drawing and writing, that led her to pursue a career in artisan crafts and design. Since October 2013 she works in Helsinki under the trade name Silver Crane, creating small jewelry series and other products for sale, but generally concentrating more and more on art.
“Being aware of beauty all around me, even in unusual places, I strive to create beauty myself. Experimenting with materials and techniques, indulging my fascination with details, textures and natural shapes, I let my mind roam to create stories and connections. I hope to reflect my care for the natural world in my work, my interest in sustainability and how everything is connected.
I have been working with plastic bags for some time now. Without the ubiquitous plastic, our civilization could hardly have become what it is today, but at the same time it is a burden on the environment with far-reaching consequences, some of which are still hard to estimate. Especially plastic bags are a fairly obvious symbol for mindless consumerism and a throw-away society. This makes them particularly interesting for me to work with, to create from them textures and structures the origin of which is surprising to most people. In our culture, plastics are commonplace, invaluable yet insignificant. For me they bear the possibility of beauty.”

”Olen työskennellyt muovipussien parissa noin vuoden. Ilman kaikkialla olevaa muovia sivilisaatiomme ei olisi saavuttanut nykytilaansa. Mutta samalla muovi on taakka ympäristölle ja sen vaikutuksia on vaikea ennakoida. Varsinkin muovipussit ovat sokean kuluttamisen sekä kertakäyttökulttuurin ilmeinen symboli. Juuri siksi ne kiinnostavat minua. Muoveja pidetään kulttuurissamme arkipäiväisinä ja korvaamattomina, mutta samalla arvottomina. Minulle ne pitävät sisällään myös kauneuden mahdollisuuden. Muokkaan muovipusseista pintoja ja rakenteita. Kun ihmiset näkevät teoksiani, on niiden alkuperä heille yleensä yllätys.”
